Case study for The Young Mayor Competition 2027
Vientiane is the capital of land locked Laos, the country famously known to be unknown. Lao PDR has endured colonialism and much more in its ascension as a modern state with full membership to ASEAN. However, despite huge hydro-power energy export and agriculture, Lao PDR still faces social issues, inequality and poverty.
The Chinese intervention in infrastructure (e.g. fast train to Kunming), Boten (border town) and other major investments has mixed results. This competition is aimed at addressing the latest problem which is the rise of Industrial Park level scam centers throughout Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. By creating a "rurbanisation strategy" for Vientiane, perhaps this can be the flagship example of how cities should function rather than the opposite, which is as a hotbed of scammers and darker elements now mushrooming all over in smaller cities, townships and regions.
